About
Cypriot b. 2003
Maya is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher from Nicosia, Cyprus, now based in the Netherlands. Her work spans performance, scriptwriting, choreography, film, and installations. Through world-building, she creates satirical yet nostalgic scenarios that question the status quo, exploring displacement, identity, and resistance. Her work allows people to step into each other's shoes, understand the “other,” and challenge preconceived beliefs. Her recent work examines ethnic and cultural identity beyond borders, and the way this state of "bastardhood" exists within a theocratic ethno-state.

She sees her practice as speculative design, a way to rehearse futures and prove that non-violence, though difficult, is the only way forward. Imagining possible and impossible futures becomes a tool to work within present limitations and counter divisionist narratives. Her goal is to develop a decolonial methodology, advocating for a human rights-based approach to education on the Cypriot problem.
